Republican supporters at the GOP midterm convention in Dallas dismissed Democratic calls to impeach Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, arguing the effort has no chance of succeeding while Republicans control the House. However, that confidence could prove premature, as polling suggests Democrats may retake the House in the November midterms, which would give them the votes needed to advance impeachment proceedings against him, though removal would still require a two-thirds Senate majority.

Democrats introduced six articles of impeachment against Hegseth in April over concerns including civilian casualties, military readiness and a lack of transparency at the Pentagon. A CBS News/YouGov poll published on Sunday put Democrats ahead of Republicans 54% to 46% on the generic congressional ballot, a lead reflected in other national surveys. Attendees at the Dallas convention, including January 6 defendant Micki Larson-Olson, who served 161 days in jail before being pardoned by President Trump, argued Democrats lacked justification and were simply opposed to Trump's administration as a whole. Others, such as Joanne Chen Bryant, said they trusted Hegseth's military background and access to sensitive intelligence, while several dismissed the impeachment push as a routine partisan exercise unlikely to change public opinion.
