Peter Lassally’s mentorship of late-night comedy talents detailed after death at 93

Peter Lassally, the influential television producer widely regarded as the guiding hand behind late-night American talk shows, has died aged 93, his passing confirmed on Sunday 19 July. He worked closely with Johnny Carson and David Letterman, becoming executive producer of The Tonight Show in the 1970s before moving with Letterman to NBC and later CBS, and he subsequently produced The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, retiring at 82. Colleagues and network tributes have since described him as the "professor of late night" whose quiet, understated influence shaped decades of American television, with Ferguson calling him the "best boss" he ever had.

Lassally's life beyond television was itself remarkable: born in Hamburg in 1932 to a Jewish family, he fled with them to the Netherlands, where his sister attended school alongside Anne Frank, before the family was imprisoned first in the Westerbork transit camp and then in Theresienstadt concentration camp during the Holocaust. They emigrated to New York in 1947, and he began his career as an NBC page and Radio City Music Hall usher alongside his friend Regis Philbin, before working in radio and for broadcaster Arthur Godfrey. He went on to become a trusted mentor to major comedy figures including Garry Shandling and Jon Stewart, and played a key role in steering Letterman's move to CBS and in championing Ferguson for The Late Late Show.
