Sony has scheduled a dedicated State of Play presentation for Phantom Blade Zero for 18 August at 3am UK time, with a new trailer featuring actor Donnie Yen. The showcase gives the action game a prominent platform, but discussion is expected to be overshadowed by continuing anger over Sony’s planned end to PlayStation disc production from 2028.
Fans and physical-media advocates have organised petitions, social-media campaigns and a proposed August boycott, arguing that digital-only releases weaken ownership and preservation. Sony says it is responding to consumer preferences and cites an 82% digital-download ratio for full PS4 and PS5 games, while maintaining it does not expect the policy to harm its business.
- Phantom Blade Zero State of Play airs on 18 August.
- Donnie Yen appears in the new trailer.
- Disc-production backlash may dominate the event.
New here? Start with this
Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming action game for PlayStation 5 and PC, made by the Chinese studio S-GAME. It is set in a fantasy world inspired by Chinese martial arts stories, with fast-paced sword fighting and a focus on difficult combat.
State of Play is Sony’s online programme for announcing and showing PlayStation games. Donnie Yen is a Hong Kong actor and martial artist known internationally for roles including Ip Man, and his appearance in the new trailer is likely intended to highlight the game’s martial-arts influences.
The event comes amid a wider debate about physical games and digital downloads. Some players prefer discs because they can be resold, lent or kept independently of online stores, while Sony has said most full games on its recent consoles are bought digitally.
