Phil Collins has revealed in a new interview with The Sunday Times how close he came to death during a relapse into alcoholism, saying his family were called to his hospital bedside to say goodbye in case he did not survive. The 75-year-old former Genesis frontman, who has battled drink dependency for years and previously wrote about it in his 2016 memoir Not Dead Yet, said his organs began failing during the episode, prompting doctors to consider withdrawing life support.

Collins said he was hospitalised in Switzerland in April 2024 after a relapse, with his longtime manager summoning his five children to his side amid fears he would not pull through; he has no memory of the visit itself. This followed an earlier hospitalisation in November 2023 and a subsequent seven-month stay in intensive care, after which he says he has not drunk again. Elsewhere in the interview, Collins discussed repairing a rift with Paul McCartney following comments he had made about being treated "condescendingly," a relationship since mended via a charity auction for the King's Trust, and confirmed he will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in November alongside acts including Oasis, Iron Maiden and Sade.
