Three teenagers die after car plunges into River Wear in Sunderland
Three teenagers were killed when a car broke through a barrier and plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland. A fourth teenager, who escaped from the car, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving; police say the circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.
The victims were named as Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16. Emergency services were called near Wearmouth Bridge at about 1.30pm on Tuesday, and the car was recovered from the river the following day. Police have urged the public not to speculate and asked people to respect the families’ privacy.
