Panamanian filmmaker Abner Benaim has joined the fiction series "School of the Americas" ("Escuela de las Américas") as co-director, alongside acclaimed Chilean actors Daniela Vega and Alfredo Castro. The project has been selected for the Co-Production and Financing Forum at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, running 29 September to 2 October, marking a significant step in its development. The series tackles the legacy of the real-life U.S. Army School of the Americas, a training facility in the former Panama Canal Zone, through a fictional investigation into a 1983 massacre in Panama.

The story follows Panamanian-American human rights investigator Inés Vega, who links a graduation photograph found at a massacre site to counterinsurgency tactics taught at the School, before an attempt on her life makes the cold case personal as she tracks four graduates across three continents. Benaim, who has represented Panama at the Oscars three times and directed the shortlisted "Plaza Catedral," co-directs alongside Oscar Godoy, a former assistant director to Pablo Larraín. Producers Seedling Media Productions and La Panda Productions are targeting principal photography in 2028, financing permitting, with co-creator Guillermo Escalona describing the series as an exploration of how violence is taught rather than innate.
