Plug-in balcony solar panels are due to be sold in the UK for the first time, beginning with Argos, widening access to home-generated electricity for people without suitable roof space. The systems could particularly benefit flat dwellers and renters, although consumers will need to check permissions, installation safety and whether their electrical systems are appropriate.

The 800-watt systems are expected to cost about £400–£500 and may save an average household up to £110 a year, depending on sunlight, panel orientation and when electricity is used. They plug into a standard wall socket and feed power directly into a property’s circuit, but cannot power an entire home; systems must also be registered with the National Energy System Operator.
