Pokémon Fans Found a Way to Bring Rare Event Pokémon to FireRed and LeafGreen

Polygon · 2 hours ago

A Pokémon fan group called MercuryEnigma has devised a method to inject custom, fan-made items and Pokémon into the Switch and Switch 2 ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, using the games' local wireless Mystery Gift feature. This matters because it opens the door for players to obtain event Pokémon, such as the elusive Celebi, that were never officially available in the Gen 1 remakes, and could eventually let fans complete their Kanto Pokédex with every rare creature intact.

The technique works by using a WiFi chip connected to a computer to emulate a second console, tricking an unmodded Switch or Switch 2 into thinking it is exchanging gifts locally with another player. MercuryEnigma demonstrated the method by successfully obtaining a Level 50 event Celebi. The project remains a work in progress, though the group is expected to share further details and, potentially, a public guide, with many fans hoping a custom Mew event will follow.
