Poland arrests four over alleged spying for Russia
Poland says it has arrested six people suspected of helping Russia obtain military components in breach of an embargo. Four have also been charged with espionage, with investigators alleging they sent information to Moscow; the case highlights Polish concerns about efforts to evade restrictions on goods with defence uses.
The suspects are five Polish nationals aged 25 to 52 and a 37-year-old Russian woman. The four charged with espionage, including the woman, have been placed in pre-trial detention for three months, while the other two face non-custodial restrictions. All six are also accused of breaching rules on trade in goods and technologies important to national defence and international security. Polish officials said nearly 100 people had been charged in espionage and sabotage investigations since 1 January 2024.
In short
- Poland arrested six people over alleged military component shipments to Russia.
- Four, including a Russian woman, face espionage charges.
- Officials say nearly 100 people have faced charges in related investigations since January 2024.
Explained simply
Poland is a member of the European Union and NATO and borders Russia’s close ally Belarus, as well as Ukraine. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland and other European countries have restricted exports of goods that could support Russia’s military.
Some components have civilian uses but can also be used in defence equipment, making them subject to trade controls. Poland’s security services investigate suspected attempts to obtain such goods or gather information for Russia. Espionage cases concern alleged efforts to collect or pass on information for a foreign state.
Polish prosecutors and courts handle these cases under national law. The allegations against the suspects are claims, and they have not been proved in court.
