Poles mourn rare mass killing as authorities say attacker had far-right views
A gunman drove into Krakow’s central Main Square and opened fire on Saturday, killing six people and wounding 15 before police shot and wounded him. Poland began two days of national mourning as authorities investigated the attack, which the defence minister called an act of terror and prosecutors are treating as a suspected terrorist offence.
The victims were four women and two men: three women and one man were Polish, while the others were from the UK and Austria. The square, a busy tourist area, reopened on Sunday evening, with people laying flowers and candles; the hourly trumpet call from St Mary’s Basilica was paused overnight for the first time since the Second World War. Authorities also found the bodies of the attacker’s sister, mother and father at the family home, with gunshot wounds considered the likely cause of death.
