Cleveland Police have arrested 50 people during a crackdown on gang violence and organised crime in Teesside following the fatal A66 crash. The arrests comprise 39 men and 11 women; 10 are connected to the Volvo. Police say they have seized three shotguns, two handguns, ammunition, bladed weapons and pepper spray, as well as drugs valued at about £60,000 and £34,750 in cash. Teesside is an area in north-east England, centred on towns including Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees. Cleveland Police investigate crime across much of the area, including violence and organised crime involving groups.

The A66 is a major road through the region. In the crash described, a car carrying five young men collided head-on with a police vehicle; the seven people in the two vehicles, including two officers, died. Police believe attacks on homes may have preceded the pursuit, and are investigating whether events were connected.

Firearms, drug supply, arson and threats to kill are among the offences under investigation. Weapons and drug seizures can be relevant to inquiries into violence and organised crime, while arrests and charges are separate steps in the criminal justice process.
