A Bedfordshire Police constable has pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving following the death of a 16-year-old boy whose e-bike was involved in a collision with his car. Daniel Cartwright, 31, was off-duty at the time of the incident in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire, in September last year, in which Ryley Hutson was pronounced dead at the scene. The case matters because it involves a serving police officer facing a serious driving charge over the death of a teenager, and it will now proceed to trial.

Cartwright, of Kettering, Northamptonshire, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court, where he confirmed his name and entered his not guilty plea during a ten-minute hearing, having been charged in July. The court heard he was driving a Vauxhall Astra at the time; he was bailed to return on 18 December, with a trial date set for 11 January next year. Family and friends of Ryley Hutson filled the public gallery, and an online fundraiser for his funeral and memorial has raised more than £4,000, with his aunt describing him as "full of life, laughter, and love".
