Police officers attending a publicly funded hate-crime seminar were asked to consider whether Nigel Farage’s comments about young Muslims could contribute to crimes against them. The lecture, delivered by Abbas Najib of the charity Better Communities Bradford, used a hypothetical comparison with remarks about Jewish people and a video of a Muslim bus driver being racially abused.

The seminar took place at the York and North Yorkshire Hate Crime Conference as part of Project Unity, which aims to improve relations between cultural groups and address hostility towards Muslims. Better Communities Bradford has received £490,000 from the National Lottery Communities Fund since 2019, including £35,000 for the project. Najib said the training applies the same standard to statements about any minority group; the lecture also argued that Islamic values are compatible with British society.
