Pony herd gathering raises money for air ambulance

BBC Science ·

About 100 ponies from the Tippbarlake Exmoor Pony Herd are being gathered for their annual inspection, with public donations invited for Devon Air Ambulance. The event also gives visitors a chance to learn about the free-roaming ponies and their contribution to Exmoor’s landscape and heritage.

The gathering is due to take place at Brendon Barton on Sunday, after the ponies are brought towards Lancombe Crossing; visitors can watch for free from Scobhill Gate from 10:00. Herd caretaker Kristina Auckland said the ponies are checked for their health and welfare once a year, and that they help manage habitats by grazing. She said the air ambulance is vital for rural residents, farmers and visitors.
