Preview: Turok: Origins Won’t Rival the Classics as a Bang-Average PS5 Shooter
Push Square previewed Turok: Origins, an upcoming co-op shooter for PS5, at Gamescom and came away underwhelmed, describing it as a "bang-average" game that fails to live up to the classic series. The half-hour demo pitted the player and two companions, in either first- or third-person view, against dinosaurs during a trial mission, offering a choice of assault, defence or healer playstyles with corresponding weapons and abilities, but the writer found most encounters over too quickly to build any tension, and even a climactic boss fight against an armoured T-Rex felt too easy and repetitive rather than demanding real tactical variety.
The preview singled out the switch between first- and third-person perspectives as the most interesting feature, noting the controls felt equally sharp in either mode, while visuals ran at 4K60. Co-operative play was also criticised as feeling unnecessary, since the mission presented no obstacles requiring communication between players, and the game can be played entirely solo offline. Turok: Origins is due for release on PS5 in Spring 2027, and the reviewer hopes the finished game will offer more depth than was shown in the demo.
