Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is preparing to introduce fully realised versions of Gandalf and Sauron in its third season, a shift showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay say will elevate the series into adapting some of Tolkien's most significant material. Having spent its first two seasons on scene-setting, the show can now move into more central territory: Sauron forging the One Ring in the open, and Gandalf stepping into the identity long hinted at during his time as the mysterious Stranger. This matters because these storylines sit at the heart of Tolkien's Second Age lore, and getting them right is central to the show's credibility as a serious adaptation rather than a nostalgia-driven cash-in.

Season 3 opens five years after the Season 2 finale, with Sauron (Charlie Vickers) holed up in his fortress of Barad-dûr while Middle-earth's peoples brace for the Second Age's decisive war. Speaking to Empire magazine, Payne, McKay, Vickers and actor Daniel Weyman said Gandalf will finally emerge as the recognisable wizard familiar from Tolkien's writing and Ian McKellen's film portrayal, though only after an early learning curve. Payne described Sauron as becoming "a full-on villain" this season, dropping the deception of his earlier alter egos while still pursuing the three Elven Rings and seeking to weaken his enemies, only now doing so openly rather than in disguise.
