Netflix has released a three-part documentary series titled "Beyond Society," which premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 23. Created by director J.A. Bayona and Carlos Torres, the series serves as a follow-up to Bayona's acclaimed 2023 film "Society of the Snow" and examines the long-term human consequences that unfolded after the 16 survivors of the 1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 plane crash returned home to Uruguay. The documentary explores how cinema and storytelling have fundamentally altered collective memory and brought together a fractured community.

The series documents over fifty years of life in Carrasco, Uruguay, where families of the nine deceased passengers and the sixteen survivors were forced to coexist, creating a lasting rift between the two groups. Through interviews with survivors, bereaved relatives, and journalists who covered the tragedy, the programme illustrates how grief manifested differently across the community—for some it was a celebration of unexpected reunion, whilst for others it represented a constant reminder of loss. The directors emphasise that gradually, through generational change and the wider cultural conversation sparked by the film, fiction ultimately facilitated reconciliation, allowing people separated by tragedy for decades to finally understand one another and reunite as a community.
