The PS5 blackout protest, in which frustrated players unplugged their consoles to reduce Sony's active user numbers, has officially ended in most regions after running from 23rd to 30th August 2026. Organisers have now urged participants to continue boycotting indefinitely until Sony changes course, extending what was originally billed as a one-week campaign into an open-ended stand-off aimed at pressuring the company over its decision to end physical disc manufacturing from January 2028 and broader complaints about its treatment of fans.

The protest's resolve will soon be tested by a strong run of releases, including The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword next week, followed by Marvel's Wolverine, Control Resonant and GTA 6. Sony reported around 125 million monthly active users at its last financial update, an annual increase, and is forecasting a record-breaking fiscal year, while CFO Lin Tao has said the company has seen no measurable impact on its business from boycotts or PS Plus cancellations so far.
