Pure Reason Revolution’s Terrifying Angels came from OCD, anger and heavenly heavies
Pure Reason Revolution’s Jon Courtney says frustration over the muted response to 2024’s *Coming Up To Consciousness* helped drive the heavier sound of *Terrifying Angels*. Blending progressive rock with grunge influences, the album channels his anger alongside themes connected to his OCD diagnosis.
The seventh studio album’s title was inspired by an Easter sermon in Berlin, which described angels as frightening figures associated with judgement and overwhelming messages rather than cute cherubs. It is Courtney’s second record with Annicke Shireen and Ravi Kesavaram, with contributions from Greg Jong, Paul Mullen and pianist Kenny Fitzgerald; Courtney cites Nirvana, Mudhoney and Smashing Pumpkins as key influences.
