Quake 4’s cancelled expansion just got leaked after 20 years of rumors

Destructoid · 16 hours ago

A near-complete build of *Quake 4: The Awakening*, a cancelled expansion long rumoured to exist, has reportedly appeared online around 20 years after the original game’s release. The leak has attracted interest from fans and game developers because it may finally allow people to experience content abandoned after *Quake 4* received a comparatively muted response.

The expansion was apparently found on a used disc drive bought by industry veteran developer Jmarshall, rather than obtained through a sophisticated hack. Earlier footage released this year showed only a few minutes of gameplay, while the newly leaked build is said to contain the whole expansion; its availability may be temporary if copyright holders intervene. *Quake 4*, developed by Raven Software and released in 2005, was criticised for not matching the horror of *Doom*, the pace of earlier *Quake* games, or the campaign quality of contemporary rivals.

  • Cancelled *Quake 4* expansion reportedly leaks online after two decades.
  • A used disc drive allegedly contained the near-complete build.
  • Fans fear copyright action could remove it.
