Rain98 is a blue-hued, pre-Y2K, Serial Experiments Lain inspired visual novel about time travelling to the past to end the world

Rock Paper Shotgun ·

Rain98 is a blue-toned visual novel set in Tokyo in 1998, where a troubled man from the present meets Reina Amehara, a young woman who calls herself the Angolmois. The pair agree to end the world, and the story uses their encounter across time to explore despair about the conditions of life in both eras.

The demo’s mood draws on the era’s economic stagnation and works such as Serial Experiments Lain, which the game cites as an influence. It takes about three hours to complete, though the writer played roughly one hour; the full game also appears to include minigames inspired by rhythm, virtual-pet and fighting games. Its Steam page says it is due by the end of the year.
