Ramayana: Rise of a Legend turns Rama’s exile into an epic spectacle
Nitesh Tiwari’s three-hour film adapts the ancient Ramayana as a large-scale epic, following Prince Rama from his banishment into the forest towards a war with Ravana, whose sister’s encounter with Rama helps set events in motion. The review describes it as an engaging, spectacular adventure, and its scale marks a major ambition for Indian blockbuster cinema.
Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, with Sai Pallavi as Sita and Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana; Ravana is played by Naveen “Yash” Kumar. The story also features Rama’s exile after his stepmother presses the king to honour a promise to her son, and Ravana’s conflict with his sister Shurpanakha. Music is by Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman, there are no musical numbers, and this is the first half of the story; the film opens in Australia, the UK and US on 5 November.
