Rangers move a ‘dream come true’ for South Africa’s Makhanya

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Rangers have signed South African defender Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee, making him their eighth arrival of the summer. The 22-year-old centre-back described the move to Ibrox as a dream fulfilled, while manager Derek McInnes said his athleticism and potential should help him adapt to Scottish football.

Makhanya has agreed a four-year contract with an option for a further season after making 53 appearances for the MLS club since breaking into its first team last year. He began his career at Stellenbosch and was included in South Africa’s 2026 World Cup squad, although he did not play at the tournament; Rangers begin their Scottish Premiership campaign away to Dundee United on Friday.
