Ranulph Fiennes’ stepson, Alexander Millington-Cotes, is seeking to have his mother, Louise Millington-Cotes, removed as the explorer’s attorney after reports that the 82-year-old has been kept isolated in care facilities under a false name. The allegations have alarmed Fiennes’ family and friends, who say they are concerned about his safety, mental wellbeing and freedom, particularly because he has Parkinson’s disease.

Reports claim Fiennes was moved between five facilities in one year and was subject to restrictions including remaining in his room, avoiding communal areas and wearing a disguise when outside. Documents reportedly raised concerns about medication arrangements and a “Do Not Resuscitate” document, while the family has accused the Office of the Public Guardian of failing to respond adequately to previous concerns. Millington-Cotes has launched a crowdfunding appeal to pursue legal action and transfer power of attorney to someone who would respect Fiennes’ wishes.
