Wolves needed a stoppage-time penalty from returning striker Raúl Jiménez to draw 2-2 with Blackburn in their Championship opener. The result spared Wolves an embarrassing defeat in César Peixoto’s first league match after relegation, but underlined the pressure on a new manager and squad expected to challenge near the top.

Marshall Munetsi gave Wolves an early lead after a pass from Fer López, before Sean McLoughlin equalised with a header from Ryoya Morishita’s cross and Andri Gudjohnsen put Blackburn ahead. Jiménez converted after Rayan Alebiosu was penalised for handball from Jackson Tchatchoua’s cross; the decision could have been scrutinised by VAR, but the Championship match had no video review. Blackburn finished 20th last season, while Wolves are back in the second tier after nine Premier League years.

    • Jiménez’s late penalty earned Wolves a 2-2 draw.
    • Blackburn overturned Wolves’ early lead before stoppage time.
    • Wolves’ Championship return exposed familiar defensive concerns.
