Ray Wylie Hubbard, the 79-year-old American songwriter whose work bridges country, rock and folk, has released Reel 2 Reel 4 Real, his 20th studio album. He says it is probably his last, making the record a potential closing statement from a musician widely respected by artists across several genres.

The album was recorded in Texas with Hubbard’s band, including his son Lucas, and features contributions from musicians such as Bukka Allen and Cody Braun. Its final two tracks were recorded in Los Angeles with Mike Campbell, after an introduction facilitated by Ringo Starr; Hubbard aimed for an unpolished, old-school roots-rock sound that retains incidental studio noises. Songs draw on observation and nostalgia, including memories prompted by old cassette mixtapes and a chance hearing of J.J. Cale’s “Crazy Mama”.
