Reacher’s fourth season overturns the series’ familiar pattern of giving its lead a short-lived but uncomplicated romantic interest. After Reacher becomes involved with Lila Hoth, she is revealed to be connected to the wider conspiracy he is investigating, turning their relationship into a potential betrayal rather than another passing affair.

The season begins when Reacher witnesses Pentagon HR worker Anna Merrick die by suicide on a Philadelphia subway after he approaches her, leaving him suspected of taking her classified flash drive. Multiple groups, including the CIA, Congressman John Sampson and two Indonesian women, seek the drive as Reacher uncovers a political conspiracy. Lila and her mother, Amisha, initially claim to be searching for Lila’s American father, but Reacher later identifies them as skilled users of karambits, the distinctive knives linked to an earlier crime.
