Read the furious complaints homeowners were making about Bathla Group years before building giant imploded owing $3.6billion

Australian property developer Bathla Group has collapsed into voluntary administration, with the company reportedly owing around AU$3.6 billion to private credit firms and other creditors. The move, announced by co-owner Bhart Bhushan, leaves up to 25,000 homes unfinished and around 500 jobs at risk, but it follows years of complaints from homeowners who accused the builder of shoddy workmanship, unresolved defects and poor customer service, suggesting the warning signs were visible long before the financial collapse.

Administrators from Teneo have been appointed to assess Bathla's finances and stabilise operations, while urgent talks are underway with lenders. Homeowners have repeatedly taken the firm to tribunals and courts: in 2021, a Quakers Hill customer won more than $7,000 in costs after NCAT found issues including damaged property and an unrepaired dangerous staircase, while other buyers have described flooding, faulty plumbing, unfinished kitchens, and homes left dirty and infested with pests at settlement. Additional complaints cited waterproofing failures, a broken drain pipe causing leaks, and first-home buyers left with unfinished fittings and significant financial and emotional distress.
