The controversy arose after Crockett criticised celebrities who campaign against data centres while frequently posting selfie videos, prompting the San Antonio Current to characterise him as pro-data centre, a claim he strongly rejected. Nelson had previously objected to a proposed data centre near Abbott, Texas, citing concerns over water use, light pollution and noise, while Tucker urged people to help "save rural Texas." Crockett clarified he has opposed artificial intelligence and criticised tech billionaires' political influence for some time, while also acknowledging his own reliance on smartphones and social media.
