Red Bulls phenom Julian Hall could soon be cap-tied to USMNT — thanks to FIFA rules
Julian Hall could become tied to the United States men’s national team if he appears in an upcoming Concacaf Nations League match against Haiti. The 18-year-old is also eligible to represent Poland, so an appearance in the official competition would settle his international future for now under FIFA rules.
Hall scored three goals and made an assist in four friendlies after his first senior US call-up in September and October. He said then that he remained open to Poland; coach Mauricio Pochettino said Hall had been excited to play for the US. The Haiti matches are scheduled for 14 November in Miami and 17 November in Cincinnati, while Hall has scored 16 goals and provided four assists in 34 matches for the Red Bulls this season.
In short
- Hall may be tied to the US if he plays against Haiti.
- He is also eligible to represent Poland.
- He has scored 16 goals for the Red Bulls this season.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The United States has a strong case for selecting Hall: he has impressed with the senior team, and giving a promising 18-year-old competitive experience could help both his development and the national side. If he chooses to play, representing the country that has invested in his opportunities would be a meaningful commitment.
The case against
Hall should have room to make a considered choice about his international future, especially while he remains eligible for Poland and has said he is open to representing it. Using a competitive match to settle that choice now could limit his options before he has had time to weigh his identity, ambitions and prospects with both teams.
