Reggie Bannister, the actor best known for playing the shotgun-wielding hero Reggie in the "Phantasm" horror franchise, has died at his home in Crestline, California, aged 80. His wife, Gigi Bannister, told TMZ that his death followed years of declining health linked to Agent Orange exposure during his service in the Vietnam War, compounded by later diagnoses of Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease.
Born on 9 September 1945 in Long Beach, California, Bannister built a screen career spanning more than four decades, most notably starring as the ice-cream-vendor-turned-action-hero across all five "Phantasm" films between 1979 and 2016, battling the villainous Tall Man alongside director Don Coscarelli's cult creations. His prolific output across dozens of horror and genre titles earned him the nickname "the hardest working man in horror," and he also produced several projects and released six albums of rock, folk and country music as a singer-songwriter.

Reggie Bannister was a US actor and musician who spent more than four decades working in low-budget horror and genre films. He became a cult favourite through the "Phantasm" series, in which he played Reggie, an ice-cream salesman turned monster-fighter, appearing in all five instalments from 1979 to 2016 alongside director Don Coscarelli's recurring creations, including the villain known as the Tall Man.
Beyond "Phantasm," Bannister appeared in dozens of horror productions and also worked as a producer, earning him a reputation within the genre as an unusually prolific performer. He additionally pursued music, releasing six albums across rock, folk and country styles during his career.
He served in the Vietnam War, an experience that reportedly exposed him to Agent Orange, a chemical linked to long-term health problems. In later life he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease, conditions that contributed to a decline in his health.
