James Taylor’s 1970 album *Sweet Baby James* marked a decisive turnaround after his little-noticed debut on the Beatles’ Apple label. After producer Peter Asher left Apple, Taylor followed him to Warner Bros., where greater creative stability helped him establish the restrained, singer-songwriter style that became central to his career.

Taylor made the record while dealing with addiction and with relatively few songs prepared, circumstances that made its success uncertain. Recorded in Los Angeles with musicians including Danny Kortchmar and Russ Kunkel, it featured “Fire and Rain”, a major pop hit, alongside songs such as “Sweet Baby James” and “Steamroller”, and became his breakthrough album.
