Remembering When Two Members of a Legendary Band Reunited for a One-off Project in 1984

American Songwriter ·

Robert Plant revived The Honeydrippers for a 1984 EP, bringing Jimmy Page in to play guitar on two tracks. Their collaboration offered fans a rare reunion after Led Zeppelin split following John Bonham’s death, and helped pave the way for Plant and Page to reunite with John Paul Jones at Live Aid.

Plant had formed The Honeydrippers with musical friends while considering leaving music, before Page began pursuing solo work. For the EP, Nile Rodgers played rhythm guitar and Paul Shaffer piano, while former Yardbirds bandmate Jeff Beck also contributed. The group’s cover of Phil Phillips’ “Sea of Love”, featuring Page’s guitar solo, reached the US Top 5 in 1985; Plant did not want to continue as a full-time crooner, so there was no second volume.
