Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve has been confirmed to play 18th-century writer and women's rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft in Mia Hansen-Løve's new period drama, If Love Should Die, with Johnny Flynn and Vicky Krieps joining the cast in key roles. The project, a European co-production between Ireland, France, Norway, Spain and the UK, is being launched with a script-backed sales push by Goodfellas at the Toronto International Film Festival, positioning it as one of the market's most anticipated European titles.

The film covers the final 12 years of Wollstonecraft's life as she forges an independent path as a writer amid Enlightenment ideals on the eve of the French Revolution, after being dismissed from her post as a governess. It will be Hansen-Løve's first English-language feature since 2021's Bergman Island, and reunites her with cinematographer Claire Mathon, editor Marion Monnier and other regular collaborators. The production is backed by Anonymous Content and RT Features, with financing and producing partners spanning Ireland, Spain, Norway and the UK, and additional cast including Charlie Kelly, Will Keen, Tom Sturridge and Jane Beever.
