A Sheffield resident has proposed reopening the disused Great Central Railway as a strategy to address severe traffic congestion affecting the city's ring road. The letter raises concerns about persistent traffic tailbacks creating significant air quality and pollution problems, arguing that enhanced public transport infrastructure could reduce dependence on cars and improve environmental conditions.

The proposal recommends using existing diesel trains as an interim solution whilst developing a longer-term conversion to tram-train service along the corridor from Nunnery Square through Victoria, Wadsley Bridge, Oughtibridge and Deepcar. The letter also addresses the Green Party's recent decision to permit greenbelt development, suggesting that pursuing railway expansion could help address environmental concerns resulting from that land-use decision.
