Rep. Laura Gillen wins key Long Island congressional race crucial to helping decide who holds onto House
Laura Gillen won re-election in New York’s 4th Congressional District, defeating Republican Jeanine Driscoll and retaining a seat that was seen as important to control of the House. Gillen said voters wanted a different direction on national policy and the cost of living.
Gillen received 57.9% of the vote to Driscoll’s 41.8%, a margin of more than 16 points. The district has shifted between parties in recent elections: Gillen lost to Republican Anthony D’Esposito in 2022, then beat him in 2024. Her campaign raised about $6 million, compared with Driscoll’s $684,000; Driscoll’s platform included tax relief, support for ICE and police, while Gillen highlighted federal funding for Long Island, lower costs and abortion access.
In short
- Laura Gillen retained New York’s 4th District seat.
- She beat Jeanine Driscoll by more than 16 points.
- Gillen raised about $6 million; Driscoll raised $684,000.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Gillen’s win can be seen as a mandate for her emphasis on easing living costs, securing federal investment for Long Island and protecting abortion access. Supporters may argue that her substantial margin in a district that has changed hands recently shows voters preferred this agenda and wanted a different direction in national policy.
The case against
Driscoll’s campaign offered a different case: tax relief and stronger support for immigration enforcement and policing, priorities that voters concerned about taxes, border security and public safety may regard as central. Her supporters could also argue that campaign spending disparities limited her ability to make that case, so the result need not settle the merits of those policies or indicate broad agreement on national direction.
Explained simply
The US House of Representatives is one of the two chambers of Congress, where members represent local districts and vote on federal laws and spending. Control of the House can affect which bills advance and how Congress oversees the president’s administration.
New York’s 4th District covers part of Long Island, east of New York City. Laura Gillen, a Democrat, and Republican Jeanine Driscoll competed to represent it; the district has changed party hands in recent elections, making it closely watched.
