Major League Baseball has reportedly suspended Dominican prospect Daury David Severino Damaso after allegations that his identity and age were falsified to make him appear younger. The case matters because it could affect his eligibility to sign as an international amateur and raises concerns about age verification in youth baseball.

ESPN reported that the Cleveland Guardians had agreed a $2.9 million pre-deal with a player presented as “David Severino Damaso”, believed to be 13 or 14, but that he was allegedly about two years older. The report alleges his former trainer, with his parents’ approval, used false birth and medical records and later created a fake death certificate and tombstone for the player’s supposed older brother, who was in fact the same person. The reported suspension would delay his eligibility to sign by one year; the Guardians declined further comment and MLB had not responded.
