Researchers at Michigan-Michigan State game are going to collect urine at … ‘The Piss Off’
Researchers from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University will collect urine from tailgaters before the schools’ rivalry game in Ann Arbor. The “Piss Off” aims to turn the donated urine into fertiliser and show how its nutrients can be reused, offering an alternative to energy-intensive treatment and disposal.
Fans can donate at two yurts representing their team, set up at the Ann Arbor Golf Club, with volunteers directing them. The resulting fertiliser will be used on horticultural crops at both universities, including gardens and research sites; organisers describe this as the first stadium-scale pilot of its kind in the United States. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7.30 pm, with Michigan coming off a win over Rutgers and Michigan State having last won on 12 September.
