Researchers devise a full-color night vision goggle
Researchers at the Beijing Institute of Technology have developed an infrared imaging system designed to produce full-colour images rather than the familiar green, brightness-based view of conventional night-vision goggles. The advance matters because human vision distinguishes subtle differences in colour more effectively than differences in brightness, potentially making heat and infrared information easier to interpret.
The system combines mercury telluride quantum dots, about 4 nanometres wide, with a dual-layer OLED display. The dots respond differently to infrared wavelengths, including those up to around 2 micrometres tested by the team, and convert the resulting signals into distinct visible colours. Unlike standard infrared detectors, which usually preserve mainly intensity information, the approach aims to retain wavelength-related detail in an ordinary-looking image.
