Director Zach Cregger's new "Resident Evil" film has been confirmed for a theatrical release on 18 September, alongside an exclusive first-look image of star Austin Abrams. The project marks a major step for Cregger, who has built a strong reputation with the low-budget hit "Barbarian" and 2025's acclaimed "Weapons," and whose involvement raises expectations for a franchise adaptation that has had a mixed history on screen.

Notably, the film is not based on any specific "Resident Evil" game but is instead a new story set within the existing canon, co-written by Cregger and "John Wick" writer Shay Hatten. The cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Johnno Wilson alongside Abrams, whose newly revealed image shows him fleeing during what is described as one of the production's most complex scenes. Cregger has further projects lined up afterwards, including sci-fi film "The Flood" and a prequel to "Weapons".
