‘Resident Evil’ Officially Unleashes a Double Dose of Horror on Netflix

Collider ·

The first two Milla Jovovich-led Resident Evil films have begun streaming on Netflix in the United States, giving viewers a chance to revisit the start of Alice’s fight against the Umbrella Corporation. The films show the crisis escalating from a disaster inside an underground research facility to a city-wide infection, making them an introduction to the franchise’s early mix of horror and action.

The 2002 Resident Evil, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, follows Alice as she wakes with no memory in a mansion and is taken to Umbrella’s Hive, where the T-virus has infected its staff. Resident Evil: Apocalypse, directed by Alexander Witt from Anderson’s screenplay, moves the action to Raccoon City and adds game characters Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira, as well as the creature Nemesis. Both films arrived on Netflix on 1 November.

In short

Explained simply

Resident Evil is a horror and action film series based on a video game franchise. Its stories centre on the Umbrella Corporation, a powerful company conducting secret research, and the T-virus, a pathogen that can turn people into dangerous, infected creatures.

The early films follow Alice, a woman drawn into the crisis as it spreads beyond Umbrella’s underground facility. The wider cast includes characters from the games, such as police officer Jill Valentine and soldier Carlos Oliveira. The story’s shift from a contained disaster to a threat to a whole city establishes the scale of the danger in the series.
