Sheffield residents have submitted a formal request to expand an existing 20mph speed limit zone to cover two residential roads where collisions and serious injuries have occurred at a junction on a blind corner and hill. The campaign, backed by over 140 signatures, argues that Shrewsbury Road and Talbot Street warrant the same protective measures already applied to neighbouring streets, emphasising their residential character and documented safety risks.

The council acknowledged the petition but explained that current policy excludes B-class roads from the scheme, limiting its implementation to residential streets below that classification. Officials indicated that a comprehensive review of the 20mph policy is underway following the council's adoption of Vision Zero, an initiative aimed at eliminating serious road injuries by 2030, with a revised policy potentially discussed by year's end. In the interim, temporary measures such as speed-activated warning signs may be deployed, though funding constraints have also delayed a separate request for a pedestrian crossing on another local road where multiple accidents have been recorded.
