Berwick hospital’s costly rebuild blocks views and angers neighbours

Daily Mail ·

Berwick Community Hospital, a £35 million project in Berwick-upon-Tweed, is being stripped back after inspections found much of its construction was sub-standard. The delay and rebuilding work have left neighbours angry about the project’s cost and impact on the town’s historic conservation area.

Residents say the building blocks views, reduces light and overlooks nearby homes, while raising concerns about traffic on narrow streets. The 10,000-square-metre hospital is replacing a Victorian infirmary and is planned to have 20 beds and 14 consulting rooms, compared with the former hospital’s 130 beds. Mechanical and electrical systems, pipework, walls, the façade and steel frame system are among the elements to be replaced; the final extra cost is not yet known.

  • Inspections found major construction faults at Berwick’s new hospital.
  • The £25 million budget has risen to £35 million.
  • Neighbours object to its scale and impact on the conservation area.
