Woking decorator sells attic-stored Pokémon card collection for £1.56m
A retired decorator from Woking has sold 41 sets of Pokémon cards he had stored in his attic for £1.56 million, turning a collection he had kept for 15 years into a major windfall. The sale matters as it shows how demand from collectors and investors has lifted the value of some vintage trading cards far beyond their original prices.
He had the cards assessed after seeing a local newspaper report about a card selling for more than £6,000; auctioneers initially estimated his collection could fetch up to £270,000. One complete Legendary Collection set, including a near-mint Charizard, reached a £100,000 hammer price, while another set bought for about £300 sold for £75,000. The auction house said the sale was its most successful in more than 30 years.
In short
- Attic Pokémon collection sold for £1.56 million.
- The decorator kept the cards for 15 years.
- A complete set with Charizard reached £100,000.
