Retired LAPD detective says Scott Peterson deserves a new trial, claims police overlooked critical witnesses

Fox News · 4 hours ago

A retired LAPD detective has argued that Scott Peterson deserves a new trial, claiming investigators overlooked witnesses who could have supported alternative theories of what happened to his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, in 2002. The claim, aired amid a new documentary revisiting the case, has reignited debate over one of America's most closely followed murder cases nearly 22 years after Peterson's conviction, with the retired detective suggesting flaws in the original investigation may have led to a wrongful conviction.

The renewed scrutiny includes theories that Laci Peterson may have interrupted a burglary at the couple's home, and alleged sightings of her walking her dog after Scott Peterson had left for the day, as well as fresh analysis disputing where her body entered the water. However, Jon Buehler, a retired homicide detective who worked on the original investigation, has publicly defended the conviction, telling Fox & Friends that these defence theories lack merit and do not hold up to scrutiny. Scott Peterson was convicted in 2004 of murdering Laci and their unborn son, Conner.
