WIRED finds Retrospec’s Joe Rev 2 to be a fun, affordable electric bike that captures the appeal of a large BMX-style cruiser for teenagers and adults. Its retro looks, simple controls and relatively low weight make it distinctive, but the review stresses that comfort, practicality and real-world range are compromises.

Priced at $1,400, the 56-pound Class 2 ebike has a 750-watt rear-hub motor, five pedal-assist levels, a throttle and a 500 Wh removable battery advertised for up to 60 miles. In hill-heavy testing, a 145-pound rider relying mainly on the throttle depleted the battery in roughly 20 miles, illustrating how terrain and riding style affect range. The bike lacks suspension, cargo provision, lights and a water-resistance rating for its battery; its hard seat and BMX-inspired frame also mean it is not a true BMX bike.
