Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film The Dog Stars appears to have become a major box-office disappointment, earning about $40 million worldwide against a reported $100 million budget. Its weak performance may make it harder for Scott to secure backing for future big-budget projects, particularly as several of his recent films have also underperformed.

Starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley, the film opened on 28 August to mixed reviews and currently has a 40% Rotten Tomatoes score. On its fourth Friday, it made only $6,000 across roughly 1,000 cinemas, averaging $6 per venue, while its domestic total remained below $15 million; Scott is now working on an adaptation of Treasure Island.
