Riot Games Officially Confirms End of an Era for League of Legends

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Riot Games has announced it is ending active development on 2XKO, its League of Legends fighting game, after concluding the title cannot become financially sustainable. The company said it will finish remaining planned content before delivering a final bug-fix patch in December, after which servers will stay online for continued play but no further major updates will be made. The decision comes despite 2XKO drawing strong interest at the Evo 2026 tournament, where it was the third most-played game behind Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, underscoring how enthusiasm from dedicated fans did not translate into enough retained players to justify ongoing investment.

Riot said the game brought in substantially less revenue than it cost to operate, with engagement remaining flat despite major updates. Two final champions, Lux in September and Samira in October, will still be added, bringing the roster to 17 before development ends. The studio is also unlocking all champions, halting sales of the premium currency KO Points, and refunding all purchases made on or before 20 August, with PC refunds expected by November 2026. 2XKO launched in October 2025 after nearly a decade in development and will remain free to download and playable on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X beyond 2026.
