Rob Reiner has posthumously won an Emmy for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his role in "The Bear," nine months after his death alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in December. It marks the first posthumous Emmy for an on-camera performance since Raúl Julia in 1995, and comes as Reiner is widely remembered for directing classics such as "This Is Spinal Tap," "The Princess Bride" and "When Harry Met Sally."

Reiner beat competition including Michael J. Fox, Brett Goldstein and Christopher McDonald, with presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepting on his behalf to a standing ovation. The win also breaks a family record, as his 48-year gap since his last Emmy in 1978 surpasses the previous 37-year mark held by his father, Carl Reiner. The full Emmys ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, airs live on NBC and Peacock on 14 September, with "The Pitt" leading this year's nominations.
