Robert Eggers is developing and directing an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for Focus Features, which won a bidding war involving A24, Sony and Warner Bros. The project would reunite Eggers with Focus, the studio behind his films including Nosferatu, The Northman, The Witch and The Lighthouse.

The adaptation is expected to use Old English dialogue, reflecting Eggers’ commitment to historical authenticity. The deal is reportedly worth tens of millions of dollars in the high-seven-figure range, covering production costs and fees, with the film intended to be Eggers’ next project.
